MEDICAL CODING
Medical coding is the process of assigning codes to diagnoses and procedures using standardised coding systems in order to precisely track and report healthcare services. Medical coding is essential for identifying medical errors and for monitoring the quality of care. This allows for the identification of areas of improvement and for the development of strategies to improve care.
Medical coders use the alphanumeric codes from various coding systems, including the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes, to assign codes to diagnoses and procedures.
ICD code or International Classification of Diseases are set of codes published and managed by World Health Organisation (WHO). These codes contains diagnosis of a patient. For instance ICD code, R09.1 denotes Pleurisy.
Pleurisy is an inflammation of the pleura, the thin layer of tissue that lines the inside of the chest cavity and surrounds the lungs. This condition is usually caused by an infection, such as a virus or bacteria, that inflames the pleura, causing pain and difficulty breathing. Symptoms of pleurisy include chest pain, sharp pain when inhaling, cough, fever, and difficulty breathing. Treatment typically involves antibiotics and pain medications. In severe cases, surgery may be required to remove fluid from the chest cavity.
