MEDICAL CODING

Medical coding is the process of assigning codes to medical diagnoses and procedures. It is a critical part of the medical billing process and involves using a specific set of codes to accurately describe a medical service or procedure that was performed. This coding system is used to ensure accuracy and consistency in the medical billing process. Medical coders use the alphanumeric codes from various coding systems, including the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes, to assign codes to diagnoses and procedures.

ICD Codes or International Classification of Diseases are set of diagnostic codes set by World Health Organisation (WHO). These codes are diagnostic codes. For instance, ICD code, F03.90 denotes Dementia.

Dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia. Symptoms include memory loss, confusion, problems with communication and language, difficulty with reasoning and judgment, difficulty with spatial abilities, and changes in personality and behavior. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and providing support.
