MEDICAL CODING
Medical coding is a process of transforming healthcare diagnosis, procedures, medical services, and equipment into universal medical code numbers. Medical coding professionals use specialized classification software to assign code numbers to patient information for insurance billing and record keeping purposes. The codes are then used to bill insurance companies and other healthcare payers for services rendered by healthcare providers.
Medical Coders uses a set of assigned codes for coding purpose which includes, CPT, HCPCS and ICD. ICD codes or International Classification of Diseases are set of codes published and managed by World Health Organisation (WHO). For example ICD code, G91. 9 denotes Hydrocephalus.
Hydrocephalus is caused by a blockage or malformation of the brain's ventricles, which are fluid-filled cavities in the brain. Symptoms of hydrocephalus include headaches, vomiting, dizziness, seizures, and problems with balance and coordination. Treatment typically involves the insertion of a shunt, a device that diverts excess cerebral spinal fluid away from the brain and into the abdomen, where it can be absorbed by the body. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to repair the blockage or malformation of the ventricles.
