MEDICAL CODING
Medical Coding is the conversion of a patient's healthcare procedures, treatment process, equipment used, and other procedures done by a healthcare professional or a doctor into universally accepted alphanumeric codes. These codes must be accurate as they make up the whole payment claim. These codes are billed to insurance companies to claim insurance for their payment purposes.
The Medical Coders use a set of previously assigned codes for coding purpose, which includes CPT, HCPCS and ICD. CPT or Current Procedural Terminology are set of codes used indicating procedures in a medical process. HCPCS are set of codes for denoting equipment used and ICD or International Classification of Diseases are set of diagnostic codes which contains diagnosis, signs and symptoms or any other abnormal findings on a patient. For instance ICD code I30.9 denotes Acute Pericarditis.
Acute pericarditis is an inflammation of the pericardium, the protective sac that surrounds the heart. It is usually caused by a viral infection, but can also be caused by bacterial or fungal infections, autoimmune disorders, or physical trauma. Symptoms of acute pericarditis include chest pain (which may be worse when lying down), shortness of breath, and a dry cough. Treatment typically involves rest and medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), corticosteroids, or antibiotics. In some cases, a procedure called pericardiocentesis may be necessary to remove excess fluid that has built up in the pericardial sac.
